BY Dr. Sudhakar Reddy P,MBBS, MD, DM (Endocrinology)

Gone are the days every single thing that needed to be done demanded physical labour. Most of your work now is accomplished at the click of a button – food and fashion, tickets and travel – everything is now available easily, ruling out the need to walk and exert yourself.

With that, your chances of having any sort of exercise becomes minimal, and it’s only if you put in extra efforts of hitting the gym or trying your hand at some of workout will you actually be fit.

Adding to this problem is the fact that the most popular sort of food is the ‘fast’ variety, polished down with aerated drinks.

Does it then come as a surprise that lifestyle diseases are on an all-time high?

Around 5% of the Indian population today suffers from diabetes. In 2000, which in number comes at an alarming 31.7 million people and if the current trend goes on, by 2100, the number will rise to around 79 million.

Obesity and diabetes in India has been on the rise since the early 2000s and has seen an alarming increase in the past few years. Consumption of various kinds of harmful food and drinks along with a sedentary lifestyle contributes a great extent to diabetes.

So while, doctors and many nutritionists might have often told you to get your life and health back on track, follow a diet or exercise, there are other methods which can put an end to your health woes and might also curb diabetes to a great extent. However, these methods are surgical in nature. They are effective, efficient and offer fool proof.

Gain insights into the evolving landscape of diabetes care and discover if surgery could be the game-changer you’ve been seeking for better health.

It is Bariatric Surgery.

Now, just because you are diabetic or obese does not qualify you to undergo a bariatric surgery. There are many factors which are important to consider such as your type of diabetes, BMI, lifestyle and so on. Depending on that there are different types of bariatric surgery which can be an option and this completely depends on your doctor, so if you don’t have one, visit or book an appointment with us so that we can help you.

What is Bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is one of the most commonly done surgeries all over the world with an extremely high success rate.

The aim of bariatric surgery is to reduce weight by restricting the amount of food which you eat and also to ensure that your stomach cannot take more than a certain amount of food.

Types of Bariatric Surgery?

The types of bariatric surgery  you need is completely dependant on the surgeon and what he or she thinks is best for your condition of diabetes and also the type of obesity you have.

There are mainly four types of bariatric surgery:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, is where the surgeon surgically will create a small pouch above the stomach and then this pouch is the only part of the stomach which will get food. Once the surgery is done, food intake is limited to a great extent compared to what you could normally eat and drink during one meal of the day.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

In the process of Sleeve Gastrectomy, a certain part of your stomach is first separated and then gradually removed from your body. Once that is done, the remaining portion of the stomach takes the form of a tubelike structure and ultimately shrinks the size of the stomach to a great extent. Due to the reduction in size, the stomach’s intake of food is less but it does not affect the absorption of nutrients from the food eaten.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

In the procedure of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, a band containing an inflatable balloon is surgically placed around the upper part of the stomach and is fixed there. This band creates a small stomach pouch above the band with an extremely narrow opening to the rest of the stomach ultimately limiting the amount of food which enters the stomach

Duodenal Switch

The Duodenal Switch is a procedure which is performed less frequently than the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy or the adjustable gastric band due to the complexity of the procedure and due to the greater risk of complications. In this procedure, the nutrients of the limited amount of food you eat is lost.
