Successfully Performed “Navigation Guided Awake Craniotomy” Surgery While Patient Watches “Pushpa” Movie
Our neurosurgeons at KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospital in Begumpet have successfully performed a rare and complex brain surgery – Functional Neurosurgery by Navigation Guided Awake Craniotomy. The patient, C.B. Prathip, a 30-year-old from Nizamabad, had been suffering from frequent seizures for the past two months. After exhausting treatment options abroad, Prathip sought help at KIMS-SUNSHINE. A team of neurosurgeons, led by Dr. Venugopal and Dr. Mohan Shashank, discovered a tumor in the left side of his brain. It was a case of Brain Cavernoma and the tumor was located in a critical area, near the nerves responsible for speech and comprehension.
Given the delicate nature of the surgery, the doctors decided to employ a revolutionary technique known as “navigational guided awake craniotomy.” This procedure allowed them to keep Prathip awake during the surgery while monitoring his brain activity. To keep Prathip calm and engaged, the medical team played his favorite movie, “Pushpa,” and asked him to identify various objects displayed on the screen.
“It was like being in a movie myself,” Prathip said. “The doctors were so kind and kept talking to me throughout the surgery. I felt safe and confident in their hands.”
The two-hour-long surgery was a success. The tumor was completely removed, and Prathip has since made a remarkable recovery. His ability to speak and understand has remained unaffected, thanks to the precision and skill of the surgical team. Dr. Venugopal explained, “This was a challenging case, but we were determined to provide the best possible outcome for Prathip. By keeping him awake during the surgery, we were able to minimize the risk of damage to the surrounding brain tissue.”
This successful surgery at KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospital is a testament to the advancements in neurosurgery and the dedication of medical professionals. It also offers hope to countless patients suffering from brain tumors.
