26 September is World Day of The Deaf
The World Federation of the Deaf is an organization which was begun in 1958, and has systematically campaigned for inclusion of deaf individuals into normal society with the introduction of sign language- to foster better communication between everyone, along with other initiatives which have the same intention. One way this is done is to showcase extraordinary individuals showcasing their achievements, irrespective of them being deaf or not. This also lets everyone know how challenging life can be, when living in an ableist society.
The Significance of World Day of the Deaf
Way back in 1951, the first congress of the World Federation of the Deaf took place in Italy, followed by a day being set aside to commemorate this event. In 1959, WHO and the UN both recognised the efforts of this organization.Fast forward to 2018, this day is celebrated along with the International Day for Sign Languages, all in the last week of September.
Deafness can affect newborn babies, or older individuals and the only way to diagnose the condition is to get an auditory assessment done. Timely diagnosis can help a lot. Fortunately, hearing aids and cochlear implants are more easily available these days. Phones and other devices come with various provisions to make them more user friendly.
Why Learning Sign Language is Good For You
The best part about learning sign language is you can do so even if you are not deaf! It is like learning a whole new language, and being part of a never-before seen culture. It can be exhilarating. It also helps us normal folks understand that life is never easy for differently abled individuals, and they have to sacrifice so much of who they are to get to a higher point in their lives. So, how can you help this World Deaf Day? By learning sign language, believing and telling everyone that being deaf does not equal less opportunities for them and to support them wholeheartedly.
Conclusion
This day is very significant as large numbers of people lose their hearing- due to a variety of reasons from a very young age. India has over 63 million deaf individuals and some common issues they face are not being able to study normally, not getting employment and the social stigma and ridicule they generally face, which is very harrowing to say the least. Most of the schools for the deaf in India teach children how to read lips. It is also important to remember that not being able to hear does NOT mean you cannot learn how to speak properly.
