Combating Thalassaemia: KIMS-SUNSHINE Doctors Rally for Awareness and Action on World Thalassaemia Day

A Thalassaemia awareness program was held at KIMS-Sunshine Hospitals on May 8th, coinciding with World Thalassemia Day. The event, organized by the Resolution Centre of Fetal Medicine and the Marham Foundation, aimed to educate the public about this genetic blood disorder.

Government Initiatives and Early Detection

The program featured the Health and Family Welfare Commissioner, RV. Karnan, as the chief guest. He spoke about the government’s commitment to tackling Thalassaemia, including providing free screening services diagnostic centers. Dr. A. V. Gurava Reddy, Managing Director of KIMS-Sunshine Hospitals, emphasized the importance of healthcare professionals being informed about Thalassaemia and urged widespread participation in screening for early detection and management.

Challenges and Importance of Blood Donation

The event also featured prominent medical experts. Padmasri Dr. Manjula Anagani stressed the need for increased public education to eradicate Thalassaemia. Dr. Ramana Dandamudi, a paediatric hemato-oncologist, spoke about the challenges faced by Thalassaemia patients, while Dr. R. S. V. Sri Krishna, IAP Telangana Treasurer, highlighted the importance of blood donation.

Leading the Fight Against Thalassemia

Dr. Chinmayee Ratha and Dr. Nabath, who convened the program, have been at the forefront of the fight against Thalassaemia. Last month, they conducted awareness drives at various institutes to equip the youth with knowledge to combat the disease effectively.

Collective Action for a Brighter Future

The Thalassaemia awareness program emphasized the need for proactive measures by the healthcare community and the public. By raising awareness, educating the public, and working together, we can reduce the burden of Thalassaemia and improve the lives of those affected.
